Fun facts about the English language

No word in the English language rhymes with month.

"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt".

The word "set" has more definitions than any other word in the English language.

"Underground" is the only word in the English language that begins and ends with the letters "und."

The longest one-syllable word in the English language is "screeched."

There are only four words in the English language which end in"-dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.

The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

The only other word with the same amount of letters is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses, its plural.

There is a seven letter word in the English language that contains ten words without rearranging any of its letters, "therein": the, there, he, in, rein, her, here, here, ere, therein, herein.

No words in the English language rhyme with orange, silver or purple.

'Stewardesses' is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.

The combination "ough" can be pronounced in nine different ways. The following sentence contains them all: "A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."

The verb "cleave" is the only English word with two synonyms which are antonyms of each other: adhere and separate.

The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is "uncopyrightable."

Present Perfect continuous Vs. Present Perfect Simple

I have often found that students often get confused between present perfect simple and present perfect continuous.

Here is a very clear instructional video that explains the two in a wonderfully simple clear way. I really hope that my students found it useful when I played it in class few days ago ;)

And here is a slideshow dealing with these two tenses:

And here is another one explaining the present perfect simple:

To make sure that students understand these tenses well, they can go to these following sites where they can test themselves using some online exercises:

English Grammar Lessons

1st conditional videos

1st conditional  is covered in our New Headway Plus Special Edition (Pre-intermediate Level), Unit 9.

Here is a very useful video tutorial about factual conditionals in the present (first conditional). It is taken for JenniferESL channel, which is a very useful and helpful channel in learning English.

Another useful and interesting video on the 1st conditional. It points at its rule and its different uses and a song in the background to help remember the conditional.....

soooo......sing along ;)

And here is another song that uses the 1st conditional:

Do you remember that cute children song "If you're happy and you know it"?

It uses the 1st conditional, doesn't it?

Here is a cute reminder of it from the mother goose club.

It's a piece of cake! (Idiom of the day)

This is one of the idioms that I love to use ...& I think even my students love it and started to use it a lot ;)

When you say that something is "a piece of cake", it means that it is very easy and you can do it.

Idioms - what is an idiom?

dioms are words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally.  In other words, when used in everyday language, they have a meaning other than the basic one you would find in the dictionary.  Every language has its own idioms.  Learning them makes understanding and using a language a lot easier and more fun!

For example, “break a leg” is a common idiom.

Literal meaning:  I command you to break a bone in your leg and you should probably go to the doctor afterwards to get it fixed.

Idiomatic meaning:  Do your best and do well.  Often, actors tell each other to “break a leg” before they go out on stage to perform.
